Even the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoveryhomes.com\/blog\/the-pet-lovers-guide-to-home-buying\/\">four-legged\nmembers<\/a>. Preparing to move into a new home can be overwhelming; from\ncoordinating the movers to packing everything up to getting the younger members\nof your family ready for a big transition. But don\u2019t forget about your pets!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like kids, our pets can become very attached to their homes so moving can be stressful. Taking some time to introduce your pet to their new home will help make this transition easier for them. Here\u2019s how you can successfully introduce your pets to their new Discovery home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give your pet a tour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve toured a lot of homes and maybe your kids have even\npicked out their bedrooms, but what about your pet? When you\u2019re able\n(preferably before moving day), give your pet a grand tour of their new home,\nallowing them to explore and get used to the new scents in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a dog, walk them through each room of the house,\nallowing them time to sniff and explore. Show them where they can expect to\nsleep and eat by bringing their favorite blanket or dog bed and food dishes and\nplacing them in those areas. Get them to sniff the food dishes or lay down on\ntheir bed and give them a treat. This will help them begin to associate their\nitems with the new home. You\u2019ll always want to walk around the outside of the\nhome so they can get used to the new smells and leave a mark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process for cats is a little different. You\u2019ll want to\ncreate a safe room and slowly introduce them to one or two rooms at time. Place\neverything they\u2019ll need, litter box, food dishes, bed, scratching post and toys\nin this room. Wait until you\u2019re mostly unpacked before allowing them to explore\nthe rest of the house on their own time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bring their favorites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A new home usually means new stuff, but resist the\ntemptation to upgrade your pet\u2019s stuff. Keeping familiar items, like their bed,\ntoys, crate, and food and water dishes, and placing them in similar places in\nyour new home will help your pet feel more in control and adjust more quickly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maintain their routine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep the same schedule for feeding, walks, playtime, and\nbedtime. They may be in a new home but that doesn\u2019t mean their schedule should\nbe different. This goes for the rules as well! If they weren\u2019t allowed on the furniture\nin the old home, don\u2019t let them hop onto the bed at the new home because you\nfeel bad for all the changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be patient<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It may take some time before your pet feels completely at\nhome and that\u2019s okay! Some pets may be completely comfortable within a few days\nand others may take longer. Allow them to take as long as they need to sniff\naround their new home or come out when they\u2019re ready. Be aware of any behavior\nchanges (if your pet exhibits moderate to severe anxious behaviors, speak to\nyour veterinarian for additional support) and give them some extra love. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving into your dream home is an exciting and fun time.\nFollowing these tips will help make your pet feel more comfortable and secure\nin their new home as well.
